Glossary of Signage Terms | Architectural Identification

Organization

Choosing the right signage doesn’t have to be confusing. Our team is here to help and guide you every step of the ordering process. Below is a quick-reference glossary of common signage terms. These are the words you’ll most often hear in the signage industry.

Accessibility & Compliance

  • ADA Signage
Refers to signs that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. These signs use raised lettering, braille, and high-contrast colors to ensure accessibility for all visitors. ADA signage can be accomplished with both of our signage systems we manufacture: encapsulated system and applique & raster beads system.
  • Raised Braille
Tactile braille that is physically raised on a sign, allowing people who are blind or visually impaired to read it by touch.

Navigation & Guidance

  • Wayfinding
A broad term for the systems and signs that help people find their way through a space, such as arrows, maps, and directories. We offer consulting services from our wayfinding experts to make your space easier to navigate.
  • Directional Signage
Specific signs used to point visitors toward key locations such as restrooms, offices, or exits.
  • Overhead Signage:
A fixed sign, often mounted in a hallway or common area to call out a major location within a facility, such as a cafeteria, gymnasium, or conference center.

Types of Signs

  • Monument Signage
A ground-level, freestanding sign often placed at the entrance of a business or property. Monument signs are sturdy, highly visible, and create a professional first impression.
  • Pylon Sign
A tall, freestanding sign typically supported by one or two poles. These signs are designed for visibility from a distance and are common along roadways and highways.
  • Channel Letters
Three-dimensional, individually mounted letters (often illuminated) used for storefronts and building exteriors. They’re one of the most popular forms of business signage.
  • Lobby Signage
Interior signs placed in reception areas, lobbies, or waiting rooms. These signs are often branded with dimensional letters, acrylic, or metal to create a polished first impression.
  • Dimensional Lettering
Three-dimensional letters or logos that stand out from the surface of a wall or sign face. We offer a variety of systems. Our team would love to assist you in finding the perfect dimensional lettering for you.  To chat with our team more, contact us!

Materials & Styles

  • Substrate
The base material that a sign is built on, such as metal, acrylic, or plastic. Think of it as the “canvas” for your design.
  • Vinyl
A flexible material often used for lettering, graphics, or wraps. Vinyl is versatile and can be applied to windows, walls, and many sign surfaces.
  • Acrylic Signs
Durable, lightweight, and polished-looking signs made from acrylic sheets. Often used for offices, lobbies, or display signs. Our custom interior signs are commonly made with acrylic. To learn more about having these signs in your facility, contact us!
  • Window Graphics
Vinyl lettering or graphics applied directly to windows, often used for branding, store hours, or promotions.
